Use a UV germicidal lamp to reduce winter germs
Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-rays. Although ultraviolet is invisible to the human eye, most people are aware of the effects of UV through the painful condition of sunburn, but the UV spectrum has many other effects, both beneficial and damaging, to human health.
Specifically in the air purification process, a catalytic reaction from titanium dioxide and UV light exposure, a strong oxidation effect occurs on any organic objects that pass through the media, converting otherwise irritating pathogens, pollens, and mold spores into harmless inert byproducts. Short-wave ultraviolet light can destroy DNA in living microorganisms and break down organic material found in indoor air.
Many air cleaners use a UV germicidal lamp with a fan to pull air under the bulb so that the germs in the air become sterilized. The level of radiation produced by these UV lamps is not harmful to humans. In fact, the Center for Disease Control recommends the use of such devices to prevent the spread of diseases, like influenza. For those with damaged immune systems, the elderly, cancer patients, asthmatics, those with respiratory diseases, and those susceptible to airborne infections will benefit from the use of a UV germicidal lamp, accompanied by true HEPA filtration for dust and pollen control.
Air Purifier Central recommends the Airpura P600 and Airpura UV600, both equipped with UV germicidal lamps to combat airborne viruses and germs.
